Post-Hurricane Syndrome

Okay this has nothing to do with my post, but this is the funniest album cover I've ever seen. No wonder Rob Pilatus overdosed.

Once the wind stops and the rain ends, Florida is once again soaking in sunshine and temperatures in the upper 80s. It's hard to hate living in Florida when its so nice outside.

Now there isn't much damage to assess in my neighborhood. The streets could use a nice sweeping and I lost power for about 30 hours. Good news is I spent most of that time in the well-lit confines of my office, bad news is I had to dump most of my ice cream. I live next to a school and some of their athletic facilities (their batting case and baseball field scoreboard) are now part of our neighborhood thanks to 100 MPH winds. All the tenants seem to be enjoying our new amenities but collectively they hope the rent doesn't increase.

I wanted to give you more of a blow-by-blow account of the storm but the office power went out and by the time it popped up that afternoon, the rain had ended and the network was running a little slower.

So in lieu of any cool destruction stories I suggest visiting places like The Palm Beach Post, The Miami Herald, The Ledger, Florida Today and The Vero Beach Press-Journal for photo galleries and related stories.

7 Hours With No Power....

....isn't something I recommend.

The office lost power about 8:40 a.m. and we got back up around three. From 8:40 to about 10:30 was the worst I've ever seen. It's clearer now, still rainy and the winds haven't tapered off from 50 + MPH.

It was just really bad, At about 1 p.m. I went home, my power was off but by the time I headed back to work many of the grids near my house were on so I'm positive my power is either on or will be in the next few hours.

Overall the damage in Lakeland is bad, lots of trees down, lots of dangling power lines. Like I said earlier one of the major high schools lost its roof. Four hurricanes have hit this state in six weeks. It hasn't been a fun time to be a Floridian.

It's Been Over an Hour Now

And it's still bad. According to Tampa's NBC affiliate (a.k.a. Channel 8) Jeanne is a Cat 2 Hurricane and to all my friends in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area....Duck.

Winds are hitting around 90 MPH with gusts a wee bit higher in the storm's apex. The power flash count is about six.

I spent about 30 minutes talking to my dad. He's down in West Palm Beach and they had a pretty rough night. His power is out as well. I'm hungry and it's just Barry and I here. None of the editors can reach us and I don't have a key to the food closet.

Power flash count: 8

Jeanne is a lot like a George Foreman fight. Jab, jab, jab, monster punch, jab, monster punch, monster punch, jab, jab. Not enough to knock you out but once its over you are in serious pain.

Power at my House is Out

Apparently it went out a bit ago. It's 8 a.m. now.

Tornado? Feels like one's hitting right now. The power has flashed a few more times. We're on a semi-generator here so I don't think the building will ever lose power completely.

If you go to The Ledger's website you can read the newsblog of my co-worker Barry. Barry is happy he came here a couple hours early or he'd be at home with no power and no chance of driving here.

One word to describe Jeanne? Relentless. Frances brought a lot of rain, Charley brought a quick path of destruction, Jeanne probably won't be as bad with either but it's pretty nasty.

It's Getting a Little Worst

It's 7:45 now, about three minutes ago the strongest squalls have rolled through town. Apparently Kathleen Senior High School is losing its roof. Kathleen was my rival high school and my old basketball coach is the principal there.

Right now the winds are between 70-80 but they just feel so much stronger. I'm in a massive building that should stand up to this but I'm thinking about my friend Johnny (same one I mentioned earlier) and hoping his mobile home will survive its third dance with a Hurricane.

The power just flashed so I'll publish this one.

Blogging Through the Eyewall of Jeanne

It's 7:34 a.m. in Lakeland, Florida and the city is getting hammered by the eyewall of Hurricane Jeanne. Winds are hitting in the high 60s and 70s and the rain is coming in sheets.

It's an eerie sound, occasionally frightening and occasionally fascinating. I can't help but stare out of the windows.

This storm was SUPPOSED to veer northwest towards once it hit the land Orlando, but those guys have gotten hit enough with Charley and Frances.
