Spoiling the Fun? Nah
Movies suck these days. Even the "good" ones are really just crap with either: a) a standout acting performance, b) standout special effects, or c) a good plot.
You really can't get all three in a film. Two out of three is terrific. One out of three is about the norm.
I saw the Day After Tomorrow and it's an entertaining film. Not great, barely good actually, but greatly entertaining because watching the effects and the plot was fun.
*NOTE, I'M GIVING AWAY SPOILERS*
All the main characters survive. Why? Because someone had to. I knew in the first three minutes that Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal were going to hang around. I knew Sela Ward and the cancer patient were going to live. The plot line was that predictable, most movies are that predictable really. The fascination was in the destruction and the storyline involving this catastrophe.
I remember watching older films with my dad. Classic movies like 12 Angry Men, Citizen Kane, The Maltest Falcon, etc. etc.,. Movies haven't changed much. Those films were a lot better in terms of quality acting and drama. But the goal of a movie has never changed, the destination is still secondary to the voyage.
