Good luck Kelly...and please get a dog :)
I really don't know Kelly well, I'm much closer to her sister. But Kelly is an interesting case of taking control of life.
After graduating from Nebraska, Kelly went back home to Northern California and took a job at
Pebble Beach as some sort of smiling face to the stars (or something like that, I'm sure there's a technical title like "cheery face") and she even got a few chances to play on the famed golf course. (Imagine a person playing their first-ever round of golf and getting to do it at Pebble Beach...NOT FAIR!!)..
Anyway, as it's been described, Monterey, Calif. is a great place to visit but a terrible place to live and start a career. Kelly, now 25 or so, obviously had greater goals in life than sharing tea with
Emma Thompson and complaining about how
George Lucas stiffed her on a tip (and stiffed all Star Wars fans by making a shitty product)
Well she became involved in politics, partially inspired by the current "adminstration's" failures as described in a pretty infamous Michael Moore
flick. She volunteered for her local politicians and although she suffered a terrible loss personally, as the party did nationally, she became a stronger person for it.
After much thought (or maybe little thought, I can't confirm either) Kelly decided it was time for a change so she packed up the few things she had (including that animal she's hugging) and decided to head east to Washington D.C. without a job, without an apartment, without any guarantees.
As her travels began she became a celebrity of sorts on
XM Satellite Radio when XM DJ "Matt the Cat" told the listening audience about her voyage while taking song requets. Several people called his show after hearing the message, congratulating Kelly for taking control of her life while wishing they could be as brave or sharing stories about their own life-altering moves.
Well after a stopover in Nebraska, Kelly made it to D.C. over the weekend and by Monday evening she found herself an apartment and a job as a staff assistant for
Rep. Sam Farr. At last update she was shopping at IKEA for furniture and she even gave her fans a final update when she stopped by the XM Studios for an on-air interview.
I give Kelly a lot of credit, she could've fell into a trap, possibly moved up the Pebble Beach ladder and made of career of catering to celebs, it can pay pretty well. However, she made a decision that no "experienced" adult would've approved of, she followed her interests and took control of her life. This story doesn't end with some grand take of Kelly making millions or becoming a D.C. power player, after all she's young and her story is still being written.
But I wanted to share this with my audience (and maybe Kelly will stop by one day and explain herself) and let you know that we're still in control of how we live and we have no one to blame but ourselves for being happy or unhappy. Most people wouldn't have agreed with Kelly moving cross-country without a big bank account or even a job to fall back on, but no one was going to stop her.
